April Seed Sampler
2010-2020, New Challenges-New Possibilities
Technology & Social Networking
It seems appropriate that I would be working on this edition of Seed Sampler in the same month that Facebook’s market share overtook Google’s and the Apple iPad is launched. “Technology & Social Networking” is a huge topic! We won’t even pretend to be covering this in detail in this issue, but we do want to touch on a few tech-trends, possible implications, and questions we, as Christians, might want to consider as we attempt to navigate the onslaught of technological advances hurtling toward us from the future. We also want to provide a few imaginative responses to the challenges before us.
There are many possible responses to our increasingly wireless world. Some advocate total separation, a re-grounding of our lives in a slower life and simpler times. Others appear to accept every gadget and new application without questioning how it may impact their lives, faith, or ability to deeply connect with others.
This topic could prove to be one of the most important ones we cover this year, and one that may also be the easiest to ignore as new devices slip so seamlessly into our lives and comfortably into our hands. But I invite you to not grasp every new tech and trend without question. Let it sink deep into your heart; examine both the challenges and opportunities it presents; wrestle with God about it; and post your comments, questions, and ideas back here to a larger community which shares a common faith in the Lord of life, healing, and love.
