October 2009 Seed Sampler: Turbulent Times--Ready or Not!
It’s here! The recession response manual, Turbulent Times—Ready or Not! A Creative Response Manual 2010 to 2020 is available for purchase. This resource has been in the works for more than a year and anticipated by many. Its purpose is to help churches create innovative new ways to respond to the impact of recession on their communities.
To give you a taste of what the manual includes, we are devoting this issue of the Seed Sampler to the issues discussed in it: Peak Oil, Peak Water, H1N1 flu, and global inflation. First of all, there is an introduction from Tom Sine that includes a quick tour of the content. Next, there are a couple articles from Christianity Magazine in the UK, one on the H1N1 flu virus and the other on the effects of recession and inflation on the poor in developing countries. Regarding Peak Oil, there is a book review of $20 Per Gallon by Christopher Steiner, a book that speculates on the effects of exorbitant oil prices. The reflection is a PBS special on Peak Water, coupled with Scripture to give it perspective. And finally, we have included some of the “best practices” outlined in the Turbulent Times manual—responses already initiated from churches all over the world.
While these issues seem daunting, we can live in hope. As followers of Jesus, our hope lies in the shalom future of God, a future we can live into now and extend to our neighbors in both good times and tough times.
