Journey 2 Mosaic
Andy Wade
Becoming a part of an increasingly multicultural future in this decade will not just a
impact our spirituality, but all of our lives and our churches. Is your church getting ready for a new multi-cultural society?
The Covenant Church in America is. They invite their younger leaders to get ready for this new majority future by going on a bus ride called Journey to Mosaic. The bus ride in an African American church in inner city Oakland where they hear the stories and struggles of that community. They spend a day with Hispanic farm workers in the Valley and then head to LA to experience the lives and listen to the stories of the homeless. The ultimate goal, according to the Pacific Southwest Conference, is “learning that leads to personal change in the area of racial reconciliation and justice. Our hope is that the Evangelical Covenant Church would become a truer reflection of the Kingdom of Christ in all its beautiful diversity.”
* What is your church, denomination, or organization doing to equip people to live and minister in our ever-broadening cultural mosaic?
* What imaginative ideas do you have that would help the church more fully reflect God’s multicultural family during the coming decade?

What imaginative things are happening out there which address this issue of our multicultural future? Seems like there is a lot of press about this in the new year. Time Magazine’s Jan 11th issue looks at Mega-churches and multiculturalism – http://goo.gl/Ne6N In fact this Time Mag. article seems to be the stimulus behind the recent flurry of blog posts on the topic
Edward Gilbreath, posting on “God’s Polotics” (also on UrbanFaith.com), asks, “When a trendsetting megachurch like Willow Creek makes racial diversity a priority, people take notice. But will it stick?” http://goo.gl/lWQp
Reconciliationtalk http://goo.gl/1CwB also posted a blog in response to the Time article, as did Kevin Bussey on his “Confessions of a Recovering Pharisee” blog – http://goo.gl/X6YX
Is it enough to be “racially aware” or do we, as followers of Christ, have an obligation to intentionally engage this multicultural future and tear down the walls that divide us?
If there’s a mandate from Christ, what are some creative ways we are/can do that?
