Introducing "The Revolution Starts At Home"
By Ricci Kilmer, Mustard Seed Associates
I read lots of really good books about simplicity, ecology, raising children, etc., that really interest me. They’re full of insightful ideas, and by the time I’m done reading I’m duly impressed. But the people who write them most often aren’t like me. They have doctorates, they’re mothers of five, they’re gourmet chefs on the weekend, and on the side they teach a couple of classes at the local university. I have trouble keeping up with the laundry on a weekly basis.
So I’m writing a blog for people like me and others who believe we have something to share. People who spend their days with kids, dirty clothes, an unloaded dishwasher, and actually find something spiritual about all of that.
I’m Ricci Kilmer. I have two kids who are one and five. My husband is Puerto Rican so I spent the first five years of my marriage on La Isla del Encanto. I’ve been part of an intentional community called the Mustard Seed House for the past two and a half years. Somewhere in those eight years, I hit a wall. Did what I was doing matter? Due to my husband’s and my gifts and the needs of our children, I had assumed the role of the homemaker. Could I really claim that the mundane tasks that filled my days were spiritual in any way? After a lot of reflection and prayer I decided that they better be! Look at the larger world that surrounds us. For so many, many people, mere food preparation and looking for water—just the pure act of survival—is the whole of their life. I don’t believe God would just throw away those people’s existence as futile. He would redeem every action and reclaim it for his glory. My goal is to do the same and sanctify the mundane in my life and the lives of my family for the glory of the kingdom
of God. And I plan (when I can escape the laundry monster that resides on my couch) to share that journey with you on my blog: The Revolution
Starts at Home
